The European Union (EU) is hopeful that trade discussions with the United States (US) will continue beyond President Donald Trump’s July 9 deadline, according to sources close to the negotiations. The talks aim to avert new tariffs after Trump granted the EU a temporary reprieve earlier this year.
Officials suggest the US may respond within days to the final round of talks, which could determine whether new tariffs are imposed or postponed. The EU believes both sides have strong incentives to avoid disruption and continue constructive dialogue.
“The US is likely to react within the next few days to the final round of talks and say what comes next,” said a source familiar with the matter.
The July 9 deadline was set by President Trump as part of a temporary waiver on tariffs targeting European exports. Both sides have remained engaged in intensive negotiations, with EU diplomats pushing for a longer-term trade resolution.
A resolution—or even an extension—would reduce global trade uncertainty, especially as tensions with China show signs of easing. For the EU, avoiding new tariffs on key sectors like automobiles and machinery is critical to economic stability in the second half of 2025.
