In a major development for global trade and supply chains, the United States and China have agreed to speed up the delivery of rare earth materials to the US. The deal was confirmed by a White House official on Thursday evening and is seen as a move to ease recent tensions around critical mineral access.
“The administration and China agreed on an additional understanding for a framework to implement the Geneva agreement,” said a senior White House source.
This framework will support the resumption and acceleration of rare earth shipments to the US, with both sides making mutual concessions. According to Bloomberg, US Commerce Secretary Howard Lutnick remarked, “They’re going to send us rare earths,” and added, “we’ll roll back our countermeasures.”
Rare earth elements (REEs) are essential for manufacturing high-tech devices, including smartphones, electric vehicles, military equipment, and wind turbines. The US has long relied heavily on Chinese exports for these materials, making any supply disruptions a major economic concern.

While the agreement is a promising step forward, implementation will be key. The framework under the Geneva agreement needs practical mechanisms and transparency to ensure a stable supply chain moving forward.
